Stephen Morley completed his degree with Honors from Nottingham University in 1979 and decided to dedicate two years to Voluntary Service Overseas gaining first hand experience of how his ‘technical knowledge’ received at university could be applied practically and efficiently for the benefit of society. The Two years with VSO in Papua New Guinea was to shape Stephen Morley’s future career by providing in depth understanding of the importance to the community of the role of the Engineer.
Stephen Morley has gone on to achieve international acclaim in the past twenty seven years applying innovation and artistry to Structural Design Engineering. The focus of Stephen’s roles over these years includes lead designer, design manager and business development for various companies as well as his own businesses. Some iconic projects and roles include Venue Design Management Lead on the London Olympics as part of the Client’s Delivery Partner (also instrumental in the successful bid), key presenter for the Wembley Stadium Bid with Stephen Morley then appointed as Director of Structural Design (5yrs). Bianchi Morley derived the solution for Wimbledon Centre Court’s moving roof with Stephen leading the concept design and the interface between the various mechanical and structural contractors and disciplines. Stephen was instrumental in the successful BOOT Bid for Stadium Australia and then was Lead Structural Designer and designer of the roof form. The Client for the Ascot Racecourse redevelopment specifically requested that Stephen be a Specialist Consultant for Concept Design and delivery. In 2003 Stephen was appointed as structural advisor to the IOC. Stephen Morley’s experience also encompasses numerous other stadiums, arenas, leisure centres, universities (Green Building Award for DeMontfort University) and other building types.
A firm believer in unifying design and construction, Stephen works closely with contractors and fabricators from the earliest opportunity and has been instrumental in the derivation of erection methodologies and allowing for these in design, detailing and delivery. Stephen has substantial experience in project procurement including design and build i.e. estimating, tender preparation and presentation for numerous successful tenders for steelwork projects in the UK, Australia and SE Asia including Stadium Australia; Telecom Tower KL Sky Gardens; Sarawak Stadium; Formula One Circuit roof Supang, Malaysia; Hall of Steel Leeds Armories Museum etc.
Stephen has formed many respectful relationships over the years with key Clients, Contractors, Architect Practices and Engineering Companies (in various countries including Australia) and is often requested as a guest lecturer at Institutions and Universities in various countries and is looked upon as a role model to inspire future Engineers. Stephen Morley was recently selected by his peers in the industry as a current day Brunel and was nominated for the Prince Philip Designers Prize 2004.
A passionate believer in sustainability Stephen ensured a very lightweight design for Stadium Australia and helped ensure no chlorines were used in the structure and the design has set the benchmark for efficiency of materials used and for environmental sustainability. Stephen has led the Structural Design on a number of passively conditioned buildings including DeMontfort University’s School of Engineering (Queens Building), awarded the Green Building of the Year & nominated by Architecture Today as one of the ten most significant buildings of the last decade.
As a result of working in Australia on various projects over the years Stephen chose to recently relocate to Australia and was granted residency on the basis of distinguished talent. Stephen is currently residing in Sydney but has now purchased land in Adelaide and intends to design a residence there.
